Design Development to Handover (RIBA 3-6)

The story

dkstudio's design could not be built by conventional shopfitting. A continuously double-curved bar, a canopy with no support from the ceiling, and ten towers doing structural, display, and technical work at once are engineering problems that happen to need a furniture-grade finish. We resolved load paths before finishes were discussed.

What I did

  • Led the engineering and technical development of the specialist package: the interactive scent bar, ten digital display towers, three product towers, and the cantilevered canopy.

  • Owned the technical documentation and shop drawings, and coordinated the structural engineering of the towers and cantilevers.

  • Ran prototyping and sample approval with dkstudio and Coty Canada.

Key figures

Bar almost 22 ft long, double-curved and cantilevered, in heat-formed solid surface · ten digital display towers · 54 ft canopy cantilevered from the towers · installed by spider crane while neighbouring concessions kept trading.
