MY ROLE

Technical Designer & Project Manager

The story

Pappas Design Studio's concept described forms and a quality of light, not how they would be built, hung, powered, certified, or maintained. We worked backwards from the finished appearance, building the sails as triangulated frames with tensioned textile skins for an even, sourceless glow, light enough to hang from the existing structure.

What I did

  • Translated the concept into buildable assemblies and directed the development of a custom aluminium extrusion that carries the LEDs, tensions the textile, and forms the visible edge.

  • Ran prototyping and sample approval, owned the production documentation, and coordinated loads, rigging, and low-voltage power with the consultant team and contractor.

  • Steered the custom fixtures through Electrical Safety Authority certification.

Key figures

25 features: 17 folded sails and 8 ring features · 92 illuminated rings in four diameters · about seven months from appointment to completion · installed in evening shifts with the centre open.
